Early in the development of a new service a formal design needs to be produced which identifies how the requirements will be met. By doing this, operators can ensure that what is ultimately implemented is consistent with company policies and is sufficiently well thought out to contribute towards a successful new service. The design needs to consider:
- Introduction of new service platforms or changes to existing service platforms
- Billing and real-time charging implications
- Service provisioning
- Impact on the data network design
- Operational support of the service
Service design is typically split into two phases:
- High-Level Design - this is typically carried out in advance of any vendor selection and ensures the high-level requirements are incorporated into the design and that each of the business stakeholders' requirements are addressed.
- Low-Level Design - following vendor selection, this phase is concerned with the fine detail of the service including detailed network design and hardware and software configuration.
